About this Work

This surimono not only serves as an announcement for the stage debut of ten-year-old Danjūrō VIII but it also lists the family’s major achievements in Kabuki theater and the eighteen plays in their repertoire. Separated into three sections, the middle panel features the three squares of the Danjūrō crest, the kanji for congratulations/longevity (壽), and the figure of Ichikawa Danjūrō I dressed as the famous historical samurai Watanabe no Tsuna.
