About this Work

Although flowers were long used to decorate Buddhist altars, flower arranging as a distinct art form traces its origin to fifteenth-century Buddhist flower arrangements and gardens that recreated mountains, streams, and plants in miniature for contemplation and aesthetic enjoyment. This surimono seems to be an invitation to a flower-arranging demonstration, and Hokusai has depicted the master, Kineya Yei, in the process of arranging chrysanthemums in a vase decorated with dragons.
