About this Work

This surimono features three of the seven gods of good fortune (Daikoku, Benten, and Ebisu) in the guise of travelers visiting a Shinto shrine at the beginning of the New Year. To the far left, Daikoku is identified by his tobacco pouch, which appears in the shape of his lucky mallet, while Benten is dressed as an oiran, or courtesan. The figure on the far right, Ebisu, shown accompanied by the “tai” fish, is light-heartily pretending to be a jester.

Poem:

Daikoku too
Taking Benten Dayu
With him
Enjoys in the Shrine of Ebisu
On the Day of the New Year
—Tsuru no Satozumi
