About this Work

This is a common subtype of hoop earrings with integrated finials whose popularity begins in the fourth century BCE, peaks in the later third and earlier second centuries BCE, and then continues throughout the Hellenistic period into early Roman. Maenads are the most favored subjects among the anthropomorphic finials, but they are not as numerous as the examples with lions’ and bulls’ heads.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
