About this Work

Animal heads and Eros figures are typical for jewelry of the Middle Hellenistic period. This set combines lively observation of natural details with the animated treatment of two Erotes plowing the ocean waves on the back of dolphins. This embodies nicely the lyricism which runs strongly through the Hellenistic age.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
