About this Work

This mixing bowl refers to wool spinning, a task that fell to the women in the household. The spinning process includes teasing long threads out of sheep’s wool and twisting the threads into yarn with a spindle. Here, a woman draws thread from a basket while two other figures stand near her. The presence of the man on the left is unusual, since men generally did not participate in women's household activities.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
