About this Work

The numbers for the long months (1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 11) are disguised within the design of the obi wrapped around the young woman’s waist. In an earlier state of this print there may have been a poem that would have helped to explain the image.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
