About this Work

Domenico Tiepolo's print is based on a painting by his famous father, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, created between 1745 and 1750 for the Barbaro Palace in Venice (now in the Augsburg Museum) or its preparatory drawing in the Stuttgart Museum.

Both works depict a story from Ovid in which an ancient Roman woman, who is raped by an Etruscan prince and commits suicide, sets off an anti-monarchist rebellion. Domenico's etching was originally printed on the same sheet as another image of a powerful historical woman, Cleopatra Honored with Gifts.
