About this Work

The artist of this landscape has not been identified, although it was once attributed to Salvator Rosa. Today we believe that the style in which it was executed is similar to that of Francesco Guardi. The sketch-like quality of the drawing seems to suggest that the image was drawn out-of-doors, and while the image may have been based on a real view—the village may actually have existed in the northern hills of Italy—the design is fairly classical and is reminiscent of Claude Lorrain’s idealized compositions.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.

Possibly after Francesco Guardi (Italian, October 5, 1712–January 1,1793)
