About this Work

The courtesan Kojorô, the central figure in this image, and her attendant give food and drink to Tamaya Shinbei who is imprisoned inside a large bucket. It is night and Tamaya Shinbei’s head sticks out of an opening in the bucket while the attendant is holding a cup up to his mouth. A brown and white spotted dog sits below waiting for something to spill. In the background are two night watchmen on patrol.
