About this Work

Small clay figures, such as this one, were found not only at burial sites but also in rubbish piles. These figures are thought to have had a range of possible uses; as toys, votive offerings, as part of ceremonial practices, or perhaps as portraits of everyday people. While it is possible that a single figure could have had multiple meanings or functions that too remains unclear.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
