About this Work

Lorenzo--the lesser-known son of Venetian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and younger brother of Domenico Tiepolo--worked with his family on a decoration cycle in Wurzburg, Germany, but is best remembered for his print work, much of which reproduces the designs of his father in delicate etched lines. This image is based on a painting for the church of Santa Chiara at the Benedictine monastery in Cividale del Friuli, Italy (now found in the Gemaldergalerie, Dresden, Germany). The subject shows the parents of the Virgin Mary, who had been unable to conceive any children, offering their daughter in gratitude to God.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
