About this Work

Saint Jerome is Agostino Carracci’s best-known work; it is also, most likely, the last print he did before he died. The saint’s left leg and the still-life in the lower right corner may have been finished by one of his students. The stylized musculature testifies to Agostino’s interest in classical sculpture, but it also reflects the influence of Hendrick Goltzius’s prints. Agostino’s naturalistic tendencies are seen in the rendering of Saint Jerome’s facial features and in the intensity of the figure’s emotions.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
