About this Work

This pitcher is decorated with the bands of geometric patterns that characterize the Geometric period, which developed throughout Greece from the tenth to the eighth centuries BCE. While recognizable figures of horses and birds appear on this vessel, they do not serve as narrative elements. Instead, they are incorporated into the design as part of the richly textured pattern.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
