About this Work

Henri Matisse created his three Lagoon cutouts simultaneously, often finding ways to use a leftover scrap from one cutout as a major form in another. Every time he cut a single positive shape out of a piece of paper, he was left with a negative leftover. These positive and negative shapes could fit together again like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. The red and green shapes in this panel, as well as the small blue shape in the lower right, correspond to negative shapes in plate XIX.

Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art has a complete copy of Matisse's Jazz (Eskenazi Museum of Art 65.23.1–.20) in its original slipcase bearing a personal inscription to the artist’s friend Jean Puy, a Post-Impressionist painter.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
