About this Work

After the Geometric period, Greek pottery was influenced by Eastern cultures as it continued to develop. The black-figure technique became dominant; it was a method in which shapes were created as silhouettes. This allowed for a renewed exploration of the human form as well as a love for pattern and ornamental decoration. In both pottery painting and in the formation of sculpture, artists observed nature carefully but continued to utilize a geometric framework.

[3] A prominent name in St. Louis, Blackmer was a banker, industrialist, and member of the City Art Museum board (elected 1936). He was also an ardent collector, particularly of Chinese art.
