About this Work

Valued by warriors and hunters, horses represented wealth and prosperity. Many small statuettes similar to this one were placed in temples and shrines as votive offerings. Simplified triangular shapes dominate the overall form of the horse, and circular bulls-eye designs decorate the surface. This kind of pattern-oriented approach is typical of the art of the Geometric period in ancient Greece.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
