About this Work

Net bags, created by women, are used by several cultural groups within New Guinea. Utilized for both ceremonial and daily use, these bags are often used as gifts, for carrying ceremonial objects, as well as for carrying staple foods like yams and other goods to and from markets. Net bags continue to be made today both with historical materials like plant fiber as well as synthetic materials like nylon.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
