About this Work

This drawing is most likely a copy after Francesco Solimena’s painting for the Benedictine Abbey of Montecassino (destroyed in World War II). The subject is Saint Maurus (d. 1584), a disciple of Saint Benedict, healing the sick during a journey to France. Saint Maurus was often invoked to combat minor diseases, such as gout.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
