About this Work

Apollo, god of reason and music, is surrounded by four of the nine Muses, sister-goddesses who inspire the arts. This is not a narrative presentation; here the artist focuses on the character of divinities. The scene on the other side of the vessel captures the moment that a family sends their sons off to battle. It can be seen as a fulfillment of duty to the gods and/or an evocation for protection from them.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
