About this Work

The Greek goddess Aphrodite was a favorite subject, and Greek artists developed many different Aphrodite “types” in the fourth century BCE. The Greeks and Romans produced many copies of these famous large-scale statues in the following centuries, and this Etruscan artist certainly borrowed the pose from Greek models as well. Although less comfortable with the subject matter, the Etruscan artist’s skill is clearly evident—reminding us that Etruscan techniques had long influenced Greek metalsmiths.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
