About this Work

Annibale Carracci seems to have been fascinated by the theme of the Pietàs as he approached it several times throughout his career in different media. This work is considered one of the most successful etchings by the artist. The delicacy and sentimentality of his Pietà are signs of the influence of Correggio. This etching, also known as Christ of Caprarola, is believed to be related to Annibale’s arrival in Rome, right before he began work on his masterpiece, the ceiling of the Galleria Farnese (1597–1601). The scene’s additional mourners reflect the Pietà’s relationship to the Deposition (or Lamentation) of Christ, the 13th Station of the Cross.
