About this Work

Known for his sensitive portrayals of animals, Giambologna (Jean Boulogne) arrived in Italy in 1550 to study classical and Renaissance sculptures, especially the works of Michelangelo. Settling in Florence, he became court sculptor to the powerful Medici family. Although known for his monumental bronzes and marbles, his small statuettes were avidly collected throughout Europe. Several versions of this bull were produced in his Florentine studio and later in the studio of his assistant, Antonio Susini (1580–1624), who cast these works.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
