About this Work

Over the course of the seventeenth century, landscape painting emerged as one of the most significant genres associated with the Dutch “Golden Age.” Haarlem-based artist Esaias I van de Velde was one of the first Dutch artists to establish landscape painting as a genre in its own right. He strove to portray the landscape in a naturalistic manner, although to our eyes, this dark river scene appears rather dramatic. Van de Velde fitted together oak panels for his painting support; over time, the seams between the individual panels have become visible.
