About this Work

This print (seen in reverse) is based on a design by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (called Guercino) (1591-1666), also in the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art (EMA 59.82). A woodcut version of the same design was also made by Giovanni Battista Coriolano. This subject's popularily suggests the devotion to Saint Charles Borromeo--the most important "plague saint" of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. During the 1576 epidemic in Milan, Saint Charles selflessly ministered to the infected in the quarantine camps outside the city. He is often depicted praying for divine intervention on behalf of the sick.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
