1890, Gift to The Metropolitan Museum of Art from James W. Douglas, Jr., New York, NY

1886–1890 Collection of James W. Douglas, Jr. (inherits from his father)

ca. 1851/1865–1886, Collection of James W. Douglas, Sr.; probably purchased between 1851 and 1865 in Egypt [3]

Notes:

[1] The Metropolitan Museum of Art had a large sale of deaccessioned art from its Egyptian collection.

[2] William Lowe Bryan (1860-1955) was President of Indiana University from 1902-1937. After his death, a memorial fund was established in his honor; this fund supported the purchase of art for the Indiana University Art Museum.

[3] James W. Douglas, Sr. (1800-1886) was a well-known surgeon and antiquities collector from Quebec City, Canada. Much of his collection was acquired between 1851–1865, when he made several extended trips to Egypt, documenting Egyptian monuments, and collecting art, artifacts, and mummies. His son, James W. Douglas, Jr. (1837-1918, a professor of chemistry and mining entrepreneur) accompanied his father on his Egyptian travels and donated a large portion of the family collection to the Metropolitan Museum in 1890.
