About this Work

Guercino was one of the most accomplished painters and draftsmen of the Bolognese school. He mainly worked in Cento, his native city, and in Bologna and Rome. He is known for his naturalism and dramatic use of light; however, after a visit to Rome from 1621 to 1623, he became influenced by the classicism of his greatest rival, Guido Reni. As this portrait attests, Guercino was interested in the study of facial expressions and had a good grasp of human psychology. His drawings, characterized by their immediacy and liveliness, were often taken from real life.
