About this Work

New York’s Fifth Avenue—lined with the American, French, British, Italian, Japanese, and Red Cross flags—is the setting for a celebration of the Allied victory in World War I. This painting has strong similarities with the work of another American Impressionist, Childe Hassam. Between 1916 and 1918, Hassam produced a series of paintings depicting patriotic parades on flag-draped Fifth Avenue, known as the “Avenue of the Allies” during World War I. Gifford Beal may have hoped to capitalize both on American patriotism and on the popularity of Hassam’s flag paintings with this work.
