1957, Indiana University Art Museum purchase from Walter Schatzki, New York, with funds from James S. Adams (William Lowe Bryan Memorial)

probably after 1937–1957, with Walter Schatzki (1899–1983), New York, NY; formerly Frankfurt, Germany [1]

[1] Bookseller Walter (Walther) Schatzki opened his first store in Frankfurt in 1920, which specialized in children’s literature. His businesses were aryanized in 1936. Schatzki then emigrated to the United States in 1937, where established Walter Schatzki - Old and Rare Books, Prints and Autographs in New York (1938–1976). Although it remains possible that he acquired the drawing before leaving Germany, he appears to have done most of his business in prints and drawings after his arrival in the United States.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
