About this Work

This realistic portrayal of an anguished peasant woman from González’s native Catalonia departs radically from the Cubist and abstract sculpture for which he had become known in the 1930s. The head relates to a full-length sculpture of the same figure, made for the Spanish pavilion at the 1937 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Like Picasso’s painting Guernica, which was also displayed in that pavilion, González’s sculpture comments on the horrors of the Spanish Civil War.
