January 7, 1948, Indiana University Art Museum purchase from Weyhe Gallery, New York, NY

ca. 1948, with Weyhe Gallery, New York, NY [1]

after 1922-before 1948, Graphisches Kabinett, Bremen, Germany [2]

Notes:

[1] Per accession record (Registration files). Erhard Weyhe was among the first dealers to introduce Kolbe's work, most notably his sculptures, to American audiences. Weyhe traveled regularly to Germany, where he acquired numerous works on paper, but it is unknown where he may have acquired the Kolbe drawing prior to World War II.

[2] Per inscription on the verso along the bottom right edge. J.B. Neumann, the gallery's founder, moved to the United States in 1923 soon after Kolbe made this drawing. Neumann may have brought the drawing with him, but it may also have remained with the gallery in Bremen, which had passed to Lina Voigt by 1922. The drawing's whereabouts during World War II remain the subject of ongoing research.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
