About this Work

This print—Georges Braque's first post-war lithograph and the first in a series of images exploring the motif of the chariot driver—reflects his continuing interest in Greek styles and themes, particularly from the early Geometric and Archaic periods. Many of these images feature the sun-god Helios or his son Phaeton, who was said to have nearly set the earth on fire while attempting to drive his father's chariot to the sun, before being struck down by Zeus's thunderbolt. Braque produced six other chariot prints, including "Greek Chariot" also in the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Art Museum's collection (71.112.3).

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
