About this Work

Steinberg created a park scene out of custom-made stamps in which two distinct groups of people mill around a pseudo-historic monument to George Washington. Holding generic American symbols as standards, the temperament seems peaceful, as opposed to the fiery clashes in some of his other stamped crowd works. Steinberg’s choice to pack stamps densely in different parts of the scene (such as in the foliage) creates depth and visual variety in this otherwise flat composition. The only feature standing apart from this sensible arrangement is the Native American horseman riding off the plinth.
