About this Work

Steinberg’s rendering of a harpy—a monstrous creature from Greek mythology with an insatiable and predatory personality—contains similarities to eighteenth-century artist Francisco de Goya’s satirical work Todos Caerán (All will fall). Particularly comparable are the bird-women’s accessories—a bonnet for Goya’s and a crown with feathers plus purse for Steinberg’s—as well as the U-shaped curve of the branches on which they both rest. Steinberg’s version, however, is simultaneously simplified and dramatized with only a single figure and fantastical coloring. The subject, too, seems less like a prostitute and more like a society matron.
