About this Work

Around 1960, Steinberg gave up most of his other commercial work to concentrate on working for The New Yorker and creating art for exhibitions and galleries. This image of a man isolated in his moated, fanciful castle draws inspiration from Steinberg’s use of medieval motifs in “The Count Ory” opera project, as well as the dreamlike drawings of the Surrealists. However, like the “symbolical drawings” of his fellow New Yorker artist William Steig, Steinberg uses a different historic period to suggest the existential state of modern man.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
