About this Work

During the 1960s and early 1970s, Steinberg created much work influenced by Cubism. Here he continues a trend that goes back to the 1950s of rendering the conventions of comic language in the style of modernism. By transforming the conventional speech balloon—an ideal instrument of unambiguous verbal communication—into a cryptic abstract structure, the interpretation is left up to the viewer.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
