About this Work

Though unfamiliar with the game of baseball before his immigration to the United States, in 1954 Steinberg was assigned by LIFE magazine to follow the Milwaukee Braves, resulting in the feature “Steinberg at the Bat” (July 11, 1955). Having decided that baseball was “an allegorical play about America,” Steinberg made the game an increasingly common subject in his works, depicting baseball fields through the same abstractionist prism that he used in rendering many other structures.
