About this Work

Steinberg kept this and related drawings in a folder marked “Demonstration.” It would seem to be a political demonstration that is about to erupt into violence as the opposing groups of supporters run toward each other with raised swords. While no locale is indicated and the politicians seem to be unidentifiable generic types, the background architecture resembles structures and styles found in Steinberg’s drawings of Italy.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
