About this Work

This drawing was done by Steinberg in February–March 1956 when he spent five weeks in Russia as a pictorial reporter on commission from The New Yorker. During that trip, Steinberg produced many drawings that were published in the May and June issues as two portfolios, “Winter in Moscow” and “Samarkand U.S.S.R.” This drawing did not appear in either portfolio, but rather in Steinberg’s book The Labyrinth (1960). It is unusual in his art because he rarely did figure compositions entirely with a brush, though it is obvious that he was as skilled with the technique as he was with the pen.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
