About this Work

One of Steinberg’s many cityscapes, this piece—which accompanied the article “Miracle Island of Paris” by John Steinbeck (Holiday, February 1956)—distinctly shows the Seine River in Paris, France. Some of the landmarks on the right are easily recognized as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and the Place de la Concorde. On the left, Steinberg contorts the river’s perspective to show the “miracle island,” that is, Île de la Cité, from an aerial perspective. This little island, the site of the famous Cathedral of Notre Dame, is shown surrounded by brown murky waters, perhaps to emphasize the industrial aspects of Paris at that time.
