About this Work

This drawing is an exercise in an imagined take on the urban space. While at first glance the image appears to be relatively uniform in its composition, closer inspection shows peculiarities of pose, costume, and implicit social standing in the rendering of each figure. In the range of poses, from relaxed, confident, and extroverted to seemingly insecure and introverted, Steinberg also creates a catalogue of the available social personas of the American male in the 1950s. Some figures, such as the smoking man with his back to the second column from the left, are rendered with little detail, communicating mainly through their bodily stance.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
