About this Work

This work, one of the unpublished drawings made for Steinberg’s 1951 New Yorker portfolio “The Coast” about life in Los Angeles, embodies his ambiguous perspective on America. The couple’s fancy Western ensembles and flashy car suggest a kind of Hollywood artifice and posing. The architecture is a pastiche of different styles of domestic abodes along with an industrial smokestack and civic building. Steinberg wrote to his friend Aldo Buzzi that it was quite difficult to depict California because “the reality is too peculiar, as hard to draw as the circus, you must keep making an effort to not fall into clichés.”
