About this Work

This work demonstrates the unique way in which Steinberg could blend a variety of styles within a single image. Despite their stylistic differences, there is a clear kinship between the two figures. They wear similar plumed hats atop their heads, and their handbags hover close together between them. The larger, female figure in a veil seems to be watching over the smaller figure with a horse-like head and stylized eyes, adding to the enigma of the image.
