About this Work

After his release from active military duty as a member of the US Naval Reserve in 1945, Steinberg lived in New York, where he enjoyed the company of numerous artists, such as Tino Nivola, Alexander Calder, and Evelyn Hofer. He explored the medium of drawing in modes closer to the period’s avant-garde European art. This abstracted depiction of a running horse with a driverless sulky suggests the influence of Paul Klee’s linear drawings, as well as the motion studies of Futurists, like Umberto Boccioni. This work was included in an important exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art titled Fourteen Americans.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
