Frank Stella gained early recognition as one of the pioneers of Minimalism; however, this work reflects his move into a Post-painterly abstraction phase. Although based on his quatrefoil paintings of 1968–70, Flin Flon and Saskatoon, this lithograph adds a looser, more textural drawing style, the addition of a grid pattern (derived from polar graph paper), and metallic inks. The result is a complicated mixed-media print that blends the gestural energy of Abstract Expressionism with a purity of form. The curves and swooping lines pay homage to Stella’s friend, the late Swedish race car driver Ronnie Peterson. The Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art has two other prints from this series (Eskenazi Museum of Art 80.78.1 and 80.78.2).
