About this Work

Even before his naturalization as a U.S. citizen in February 1943, Steinberg quickly became enamored with American culture and soon found a career at The New Yorker. Having fled the antisemitic racial laws in Italy, including time in an internment camp, followed by a year in the Dominican Republic awaiting a U.S. visa, his self-identity was as an alien even after gaining citizenship. Steinberg’s outlier status was instrumental to his penetrating interpretations of American culture and pastimes. Here he depicts himself, possibly based on a photograph, as a dapper gentleman combining the best of European cosmopolitanism with an American directness.
