About this Work

In this drawing Steinberg renders his younger self, but instead of resorting to his usual playfully modernist style, he closely copies the two figures and a dog from a larger family photograph taken in 1925. The girl is his cousin Henrietta, who was visiting with her family from New York. The faces of all three subjects are delicately shaded in pencil, starkly contrasting the simple, yet efficient linear rendering of the bodies, possibly reflecting the notion that their faces are what Steinberg best remembers from his past.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
