About this Work

One of Steinberg’s most important sources of imagery were the postcards in his large collection, which he accumulated during a lifetime of travels. They served as a pre-given iconography of chamber of commerce promotions, through which, he believed, we see reality. His collection probably included a postcard of Frankfort, Indiana, which he then transformed with architectural precision into a slick streamlined set of uniform buildings, populated by a few pedestrians and vehicles. The factory (now gone) remains unidentified.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
