About this Work

Steinberg often experimented with abstract patterns and textures, as well as with different drawing techniques. The process used here, known as frottage, uses overlapping shapes of different depths and a rubbing method with graphite to reveal a pattern on the surface below. The shapes recall the French curve, a traditional drafting tool.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
