About this Work

This image reflects Steinberg’s diverse stylistic influences and political concerns. The imagery in the right half of this diptych recalls the design style of Southwestern indigenous nations. Also recognizable is the icon of a man, imitating the “Thunder Bird” represented in numerous Northwest, Southwest, and Plains nation imagery and beliefs. The left half, with the block-letter word “Gaza” and a sun-eye, seems to refer to the Gaza Strip—the Palestinian territory that Israel had recently captured in the Six-Day War of 1967.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
